Meet our Online MBA Faculty
We asked Christopher Gourdine, assistant dean and assistant professor of business administration, for his thoughts on the MBA program. Here are his responses:
Communication skills, both in writing and in speaking, are first and foremost. These capabilities are required throughout our program, and opportunities to sharpen them for the workplace occur in every course. As we all know, communication skills can be a major differentiator between someone who simply maintains their current job and someone identified as having potential for higher leadership and responsibility.
Also, students can gain a deeper understanding in a wide array of areas important to employers, including traditional business components, such as marketing, corporate finance, and accounting; the latest technological skills in cybersecurity, business analytics, computer programming, and information systems; and search engine optimization. Each MBA student can customize their degree through the combination of concentrations and elective options to suit their aspirations and career goals. The initial exposure and learning in our courses can then be practiced in the workplace to build competence and expertise.
Take advantage of your graduate education to become an expert in your career field by bringing your challenges and projects from work into the classroom. Seek insights from peers and instructors, and develop solutions you can try out the next day. Also, share your successes with our advisors. Your journey both inspires us and gives us opportunities to improve what we do.
Maryville offers accessible, student-friendly education with a top-notch faculty. We pride ourselves on a culture of creating high classroom engagement — between learners and each course’s material, among learners as a cohort, and between faculty members and students. We also use the latest employer and industry inputs to ensure our courses and concentrations reflect the most current needs of the market. This relevance is the advantage we feel our MBA students deserve. Our MBA program, like all of our graduate programs, is competitively priced. We believe education should be accessible, and part of that promise is our pricing.
A big part of strategic thinking starts with having an open mind, being receptive to new information, and being willing to learn from competitors, peers in other industries, and other real-world interactions. These inputs are the basis for innovation, which is thinking about how the latest developments, the newest process improvements, and opportunities in the market can be leveraged in the business leader’s field to create the greatest advantage. Leaders also play a huge role in spurring innovation. True leaders realize it’s not all up to them; they’re able to create an environment where the talents of both their executive team members and line employees alike are harnessed as sources of innovation.
