Maryville Professor Named a “4 Under 40 Emerging Marketing Leader” by American Marketing Association

Dr. Dustin York, an associate professor of communication at Maryville University, has been named an American Marketing Association (AMA) Foundation 4 Under 40 Emerging Leaders Award winner for 2022. The award celebrates individuals who are impacting the profession and have the potential to shape the future of the marketing industry.

“I feel so lucky to be in an industry that continues to ignite my curiosity,” said York. “Whether it be new marketing strategies on TikTok, branding in the metaverse or storytelling through influencers, I’m really just a big kid asking way too many questions who gets excited to share what’s he’s learned. I’m fortunate to have a partner in Maryville that supports my drive and curiosity to innovate.”

York’s areas of expertise include nonverbal communication, public speaking, communication training, and creative branding. His dissertation focused on how a speaker’s nonverbal traits can enhance audience recall, and he uses his learnings not only to instruct corporate executives in media training but also to help his students prepare for success in their careers.

York also places a strong emphasis on innovation and pushing boundaries using technology. His students have flown drones in class, created virtual reality experiences, designed microtargeted ads on Instagram and Facebook, and earned certifications in Google Analytics and from organizations including Salesforce and HubSpot.

York’s impact on the Maryville community extends beyond the classroom. He has facilitated the launch of a student organization that tackles public relations projects for one client per semester. Clients have included the St. Louis Public Library and Safe Connections, an organization in St. Louis working to end domestic and sexual violence. York also serves on the university’s Digital Transformation committee, a group committed to innovating the higher education experience for all students.

He brings a wealth of real-world communication experience to Maryville, including roles in agency, corporate and political settings. He was a public relations consultant on a 2008 presidential campaign, and has worked with blue chip clients including Nike, PepsiCo, and Scottrade Financial Services.

A well-known thought leader in the communication field, York is a subject matter expert for media outlets including CNN, Entrepreneur.com, and Forbes. He is also a contributor to Harvard Business Review. In addition, York continues to consult organizations on digital branding and strategic transformation, as well as serve as a national keynote speaker.

York’s previous honors have included the St. Louis Business Journal 30 Under 30 award, Maryville University’s President’s Award for Transformational Innovation, Maryville’s Excellence in Teaching award, and an Apple Distinguished Educator award.

While proud of these accolades, York is most passionate about his role in shaping the marketing leaders of tomorrow.

“The field of marketing and communication is changing drastically,” he says. “But the digital transformation of the industry that I’m known for in class is second to what will have the most dramatic impact — diversity, inclusion, and equity. I am passionate to be a leader in making the marketing and communication industry open and welcoming to a new generation of professionals.”
