Academic Bio

Dr. Deborah Lewis, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, is an experienced family nurse practitioner and a nursing educator who has been teaching future nurses at the graduate level for more than five years. She has extensive clinical experience as a family nurse practitioner in rural primary care, pediatrics, urgent care, cardiology and electrophysiology, and cardiothoracic surgery. As a practicing nurse, Dr. Lewis currently owns and operates her own primary care telehealth practice, Balance Family Telehealth.

Previously in her career as an educator, Dr. Lewis was appointed as clinical assistant professor at the University of Texas, Arlington, and soon promoted to assistant director of the FNP program and chairperson of the Graduate Studies Committee. In January 2023, Dr. Lewis joined Maryville University as the FNP program coordinator.

 

In addition to clinical practice and faculty roles, Dr. Lewis has presented at state and national conferences on topics related to nursing education, social determinants of health, and success for diverse NP students. She has served as an abstract reviewer for NONPF and other professional organizations. Dr. Lewis continues to be involved in community service to educate underserved populations, improve and transform graduate nursing education, and act as a legislative ambassador for Texas Nurse Practitioners.

With more than 40 years in the field of nursing, Dr. Lewis earned her BSN in 1980 from Illinois Wesleyan University, her MSN from the University of Texas, Arlington, in 2003, and her DNP from Grand Canyon University in 2020. Now, she brings her extensive nursing expertise and leadership to Maryville University for the benefit of the next generation of FNPs. Her passion for teaching and for the NP profession drives her to seek out innovative ways to deliver learner-centered education to prepare NP students to practice the highest-quality evidence-based care for all individuals.
